What is a Cone Beam CT Scan?

Cone Beam CT (CBCT) is an X-ray based imaging technique that, like a conventional medical CT scan, provides fast and accurate visualisation of bony anatomical structures in three dimensions. However, CBCT scanning resolution is higher, with less artefact and scatter. The scan field of view can also be reduced to image smaller volumes and lower the radiation dose associated with each scan.

Our Scanning Suite

Your patients will have access to state-of-the-art technology in each Cavendish Imaging centre: London, Birmingham, Oxford, Nottingham.

We select our scanners based on the radiation optimisation facilities that they give us and image quality they produce for a given radiation dose. We use the latest generation i-CAT and Morita Accuitomo Cone Beam CT scanners. These offer high resolution images of the skull down to single tooth scan details, with reduced radiation dose, at high speed. The latest additions to the family are the CareStream and NewTom Cone Beam CT scanners.

Referring a CBCT scan

Referral forms are available for download here. You can also refer online by registering as a Web User, a free and secure web-based service.

Cavendish Imaging London, OxfordBirmingham and Nottingham also act as Scanning Centres for the UK scan providers CGI and IDT.

Expect your patient to be with us for 30 minutes or so. They will be asked to remove any metal-containing jewellery or prostheses which may affect the imaging.

Ideally, when planning for dental implant surgery, a stent should be provided. Please always ensure that the stent has been tried in the mouth prior to the scan appointment.

Reporting

Reporting by a Specialist Maxillofacial, ENT and/or Dental Radiologist is available upon request. We are also very happy to send the scan directly to your preferred Radiologist.

Payment

Payment will be taken on the day for most examinations unless a referrer account arrangement exists or there has been prior authorisation from the patient's insurer (our service is recognised by most insurers).
