The European Society of Endodontology has recently published an updated Position Statement on the use of Cone Beam Computed Tomography in Endodontics. It provides a wonderful overview of how and why CBCT has become an asset to the endodontic field as a diagnostic and case management tool. The statement covers the advantages that this 3D imaging approach has over the limitations of 2D. It also outlines the responsibilities of the clinician, emphasising the importance of justifying the use of CBCT for each individual case. Our radiographers will use this information to optimise the scanning parameters to get the best clinically-correct and ALARP image. The reporting of the scan is also the clinician’s responsibility but we also offer radiologist’s reports.
What is most notable from this statement however is the call, in its concluding remarks, for relevant undergraduate and postgraduate curriculums to involve CBCT in the future of dental education. With the positivies it has already brought to clinical practice combined with the potentials of research, CBCT looks to be heading in a useful and exciting direction to say the least. It is therefore paramount that the next generation in dentistry are fully equipped to use and build on these imaging techniques. This is why we concentrate on 1-to-1 tuition on the use of CBCT software and various CBCT courses to all our referrers.
